Adjustments to Block time and difficulty

It isn’t easy to forecast how many miners will participate. If there aren’t enough, the system will be slow, resulting in a bad user experience. The system will run too quickly if too many are too many, causing security issues. It is critical for the system to maintain a relatively constant rate regardless of how many miners (or hash power) are currently active.

Bitcoin employs a ‘difficulty adjustment’ mechanism to maintain a constant mining speed of approximately 10 minutes per block. The ‘difficulty’ is adjusted every two weeks, considering the previous hash power. The difficulty reduces if the hash power is insufficient (i.e., the average block time is longer than 10 minutes). The problem will increase if the hash power is too high (i.e., the average block time is less than 10 minutes).

What factors influence difficulty adjustments?

The Bitcoin protocol requires miners to compete against one another to solve a “cryptographic puzzle” (known as Proof-of-Work) so that the winner can propose a new block and append it to the blockchain. Miners solve the cryptographic puzzle by changing the nonce (a 32-bit arbitrary random number) so that the block hash is less than the target hash (a value smaller than 256-bits).

Miners must find a nonce so that the block’s hash is less than or equal to the network’s target hash. If your hash is less than the target, you win and receive the mining rewards. If that doesn’t work, you change the nonce and try again and again. 

The smaller the target hash, the more hash power there is in the network. A smaller target hash makes it more difficult for miners to find a correct nonce to generate a block hash more minor than the target hash. (Assume the computer selects a number between 1 and 100 randomly.) The probability of finding a number less than ten is 0.1, but the likelihood of finding a number less than fifty is 0.5).

Fees for transactions

Mining rewards for Bitcoin and other coins that use the PoW mechanism gradually decrease. Therefore, there is another type of incentive for miners to verify transactions, known as a network fee. Users of coins that use the PoW consensus must also pay a network fee to the miners for each transaction. This transaction fee may vary depending on traffic conditions and coin type. The transaction fee is the remainder of the unspent input.

Transaction fees compensate miners for verifying your transaction. It is also possible to pay no or low transaction fees, but this dramatically reduces the likelihood of the transaction’s inclusion in the next block.
